Fourth of July Books for Kids

Our favorite American book for the younger set is easily The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller. It really makes geography fun. Really. Keller has written a follow-up book, The Scrambled States of America... and More Stories to Celebrate Our Country that you will love as well.

Next, anything ever written by Jean Fritz. She has a huge series of history books for kids that my own children literally devoured.

On the more serious side (for history buffs and fellow homeschoolers) we recommend A History of US. I bought this with the intention of making it part of our "required curriculum," but so far all my kids have read it on their own before I got around to assigning it. That's what I'm talking about.

Fourth of July Books for Teens & Adults

Not to be redundant, but A History of US isn't a bad read for any age. If you're already well-versed in American history, this may not be for you. But if you (ahem…like me) aced your school history test without ever accessing a map, then you'll love this series.

Other than my slow start, I'm a sincere patriot. If you're looking for books that bash our country or the founding fathers, you're in the wrong place. America isn't perfect, but it's the best country in the world.

Some great patriotic summer reads include George Washington on Leadership by Richard Brookhiser. Or sit down in the shade of your sycamore and down The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History.

If you'd rather be moved than riled up, grab a copy of One Nation. It's an amazing pictorial tribute for September 11 done as only LIfe magazine can do it.
